i recently finished working on a record that wasn’t very much fun to work on. sometimes you have to work with music that you wouldn’t listen to otherwise; i’m fine with that. this project was beyond that. suffice it to say, my job was to salvage, polish, and mask. and then somehow end up with a professional, competitive product.

long story short, i worked my rear end off editing, re-editing, tuning, quantizing, and re-re-editing. i’m talking twelve-hour days of sample replacement, splicing, comping, and re-amping. i tried every trick i know to make some of these performances passable.

when the client came in to listen to mixes and make notes, i was nervous but she cried and said “it’s perfect. don’t change a single thing.” then we started laughing a lot and she hugged me — i mean she gave me a serious, full-on, mother-hug — and i knew that i would be doing this the rest of my life.

When I give her an ultimatum, she says she would rather live in a refugee camp then tell me her favorite color.

so i was on a plane today.

when we took off, the sun was on our left. 30 minutes later, the sun was on our right. several passengers noticed that we were going the wrong way and pointed it out to the attendants who had no answers. a few minutes later, the pilot informed us that one of our two engines had failed. my jaw dropped. then he said, “don’t worry, this happens all the time.” this did not make me feel better.

so we turned around and emergency-landed on the same airstrip from which we left. now i’m stuck in nashvegas for one more night. i think it’s a sign.

the studio where i work gets a lot of phone calls from rappers who want to come and record (99% of whom never do). today our receptionist put through a call from another “potential client” and i picked it up while sighing and rolling my eyes.

then i heard the voice of a 9-YEAR-OLD BOY who told me that he’s been working really hard writing raps and he wanted to know if i could record him and get him a record deal.

of course, i asked him for a demonstration. he started rapping about a girl he saw at a swing set. coolest phone call ever. i hope his parents call us back.
